Tonight’s Arrested Development

Ok, so I know it’s the first of Charlize Theron’s 5-episode run on Arrested Development.  And it’s the beginning of a big season for them, so they’re trying to run with the added starpower of Ms. Theron and make the show as fun as possible, for as big an audience as possible.  But tonight’s episode just started for feel absurd for the sake of absurdity, and not in a good way.

For starters–Dave Thomas with a terrible British accent?  C’mon, you couldn’t get someone better than Dave Thomas?  And then what happened to Oscar?  And George just got put on house arrest like that?  I feel like an episode is missing somewhere?

The David Cross hairplugs stuff was hysterical, but besides that, the episode was pretty much a mess.

At least next week and Scott Baio as Bob Loblaw looks promising.

  1. I was laughing my a** off through the whole thing. Which means you’re right–probably sliding down the absurd hill. How funny would it have been for the Dave Thomas part to be played by Patrick McGoohan? (And OK–you have to admit him holding up the phone number was hilarious.)

  2. Yeah, the holding up the number thing was pretty funny.

I know…I am being unduly hard on the show and its writers…just don’t want to see them get sucked into the Fox executives’ “let’s just try to tweak the show, to help it appeal to a broader audience” trap. Obvs after 2 years of nearly getting cancelled, there’s gotta be extra pressure to perform in the ratings this season.

  3. I was disappointed. It WANTED to be an AD episode. I did laugh more the second time, but still, this had better just be a “heads down, power-through” plot-advancing episode.
