And a Sudeikis Will Set Them Free

According to the L.A. Times this morning, Tina Fey and Amy Poehler will both be vacating the Weekend Update desk (I know, that sort of sounds like slang for something really filthy) — Fey to go work on her probably-doomed sitcom 30 Rock, and Poehler to try and focus more on being 1/2 as funny in SNL skits as she was on Upright Citizens Brigade and her brief appearances on Arrested Development.

And in their place?  Jason Sudeikis

He’s perfectly funny in the right skit — which was a lot of Taylor Hicks in 2006 coupled with the prime duty of playing the straight man in the "Carol" sketch.

Nothing against him, but it’s not too exciting of a move and doesn’t promise to do much to stem the tide of a weakening Update, due largely to losing jokes all week to The Daily Show and its ilk.  We had secretly hoped for a darkhorse (or dark duckie) to emerge as the new Update host, and take things in a new direction.  But alas, Snakes on a Plane bombed, the power of the Internets was vanquished, and we got Sudeikis.

Sudekis = hack. Not sure why SNL brought him on to begin with. It’s like a drowning man reaching out for an anvil. Then again, if you’re going to drown anyway, you may as well go down fast.
