Dreamhost Facts (or A Holiday Moment to Reflect on How Bad Dreamhost Blows)

Straight from Dreamhost-sucks.com, a site which does a good job of summing up my feelings towards the current hosts of this site (and reason why it’s running so abysmally slow at the moment):

I’m an unhappy DreamHost customer, what can I do?
E-mail us with your DreamHost complaints and criticism. We’ll post them on the blog for all others to read.

Better Business Bureau gives DreamHost it’s lowest ‘F’ rating
Yes, the Better Business Bureau, a state-operated consumer watchdog have given DreamHost it’s lowest possible rating, an ‘F’.

What does an ‘F’ rating mean?
Here’s some words the Better Business Bureau has used to describe DreamHost: “We strongly question the company’s reliability for reasons such as that they have failed to respond to complaints, their advertising is grossly misleading, they are not in compliance with the law’s licensing or registration requirements, their complaints contain especially serious allegations, or the company’s industry is known for its fraudulent business practices.”

I’d like to file a complaint to the Better Business Bureau about DreamHost…

SOME COMMON DREAMHOST COMPLAINTS FROM CUSTOMERS:
I’m receiving poor, or no support at all
DreamHost promises 24 hour e-mail support, it’s quite often they’ll go well over this 24 hour promise. Especially on weekends - send an e-mail on Friday afternoon and you might get a response Monday afternoon.

No support phone number
Try and find a support phone number on their website. Go ahead, try to. Give up? There is none, they don’t take support phone calls. Try calling their headquarters at +1 (323) 583-7991 if you really need to chat with them.

Server downtime is a serious issue
This is a common complaint amongst customers.

Hidden CPU utilization limitations
Buried deep within DreamHost’s terms and service are limits to how much CPU utilization you can use. Unfortunately there is no way for you to monitor this, you’ll just have to take DreamHost’s word that you’re exceeding the limits. If you exceed the limits, they’ll disable your account.

My account has been disabled without warning
A common complaint is that DreamHost will simply disable your account without contacting you if you’ve accidently violated one of their hard-to-find rules.

Customers are unable to host forums or blogs due to CPU utilization limitations
A frequent complaint from customers is that they’re unable to host their blogs or forums with DreamHost because of CPU utilization limitations. This is especially true with WordPress blog software and phpBB forum software.

Zero support if breaching CPU utilization limitations
DreamHost will offer you no support whatsoever if you go over your CPU utilization limits, they’ll simply disable your account without contacting you.

The misleading 97-Day guarantee
Many have complained that if you are going over your CPU utilization limits, DreamHost will not warn you until after your 97-day guarantee period.

DreamHost is too good to be true?
DreamHost offers lots of bandwidth and lots of disk space at a relatively inexpensive price. Some have said it’s too good to be true. And if something is too good to be true, it probably is.

Where is http://www.dreamhost-sucks.com? Can’t reacht it. Their free domain thing is misleading as well. In the small print the terms are a bit different. I am leaving them after a year and obviously still have to pay for my ‘free’ domain, which I didn’t register on the first day (I already moved the domain away from them).

DreamHost’s poor customer service has led to a serious privacy invasion. When my client attempted to sign up for an account, the transaction hung halfway through. When customer service (which can only be reached by tedious email exchanges) “fixed” the problem, the pay by credit card option was no longer available. The customer service representative insisted that we use Google Payments. I proceeded, and then my client realized his financial information is now in the Google system. The worst possible scenario then came true. Instead of completing the transaction, Google called my client’s bank for “preapproval”. This was not to complete the transaction (which was never completed), but to gather information for Google’s marketing. My client is furious, reviewing everyone’s privacy policy, and is looking into ways to bring this problem up at the political, and possibly the legal, level.

Throughout this whole situation, Dreamhost has been nothing but pig-headed. Every customer service representative ignores the case history and either refers us back to Google Payments or says patronizing things like we could have paid with the original credit card system. I offered them a solution where I quietly pay for the account using Google transactions, and they won’t even let me help bail them out!!!

I will never refer another client to dreamhost. Right now I’m looking for the best place to air this complaint publicly in as many places as possible. People have to know that when Dreamhost pushes people into using Google Payments, Google then has their financial information to aggregate and deploy for their own purposes.

Addendum: Dreamhost customer representatives will also flame customers who complain on their forums. I know because one of their customer service representatives accidentally put his forum ID in an email with my customer service issue header on it.

    Dreamhost Sucks At Hosting…

I’ve concluded that Dreamhost sucks phenomenally at hosting websites that generate any kind of traffic. Sure, their $9.99 a month plans with massive savings coupons are enticing, but if you knew what you were getting yourself into, you’d s…
